Classic Fighters 2003
Field Report
Classic Fighters 2003 airshow again presented a range of scenarios that were largely unexpected by the public. A North African theme underpinned the WW-II sequence and this saw a huge pyramid built on the field for the weekend in addition to sphynx sculptures guarding the Gold Pass marquee and palm trees in the food court! An accurate, full scale Ju.87 Stuka also formed part of the ground display while various Harvards dressed as French and Italian fighters for the show.
The Great War sequence saw another milestone for Southern Hemisphere airshows when aircraft numbers participating reached double figures. Most noteworthy among the aircraft were the FIVE Fokker Dr.I Triplanes, the greatest number seen together since the war ended in 1918. In addition, the ground based equipment included a fully operational and accurate replica of a Mk.I British tank, complete with firing guns, along with a genuine Krupps cannon and a large team of reenactors to delight the crowds.
